Everything You Need to Know

Whether you're sending your first roll of film or you've been shooting analogue photography for years, we've answered our most common questions about film developing, scanning, turnaround times and mailing film to Bright Side Film Lab.

  • 35mm and 120 Medium Format films.

  • We currently process C-41 Colour and B&W film stocks.

    We do not currently process E-6 (slide film) or ECN-2 (cinema film), though in time we aim to add this if demand increases.

  • Our develop and scan options start at just $16.00—use our custom order form to select your options.

  • We process all C-41 colour film using our Fujifilm FP230B processor and Fujifilm CN-16 chemistry. B&W is processed once a week by hand using Kodak chemistry (HC110 dilution B), and all film is scanned on our beloved Fujifilm SP3000 scanner.

  • We offer two scan options from our Fujifilm SP-3000:

    Standard Resolution Scan (approx. 3350 x 2230px)

    This is our everyday, high-quality scan for most uses and is probably all most people need.

    Best for:

    Social media (Instagram, web sharing)

    Phone viewing

    Proofing images before selecting favourites

    Faster turnaround

    Pros:

    Smaller file sizes (easy to download and store)

    Faster delivery times

    Perfectly sharp for digital viewing and online use

    Slightly more affordable option

    Cons:

    Less flexibility for heavy cropping

    Not ideal for large prints beyond moderate sizes

    Premium Resolution Scan (approx. 5460 x 3640px)

    This is the maximum-quality output from the SP-3000, capturing more detail and tonal information.

    Best for:

    Printing (especially A4–A3 and beyond)

    Archival work

    Cropping into frames or details

    Professional or commercial use

    Pros:

    Maximum detail from your negatives

    More latitude for editing and cropping

    Better suited for large prints

    Future-proof file quality

    Cons:

    Larger file sizes (slower downloads/uploads)

    Slightly longer turnaround time

    May be more than needed for casual/social use

    Simple rule of thumb: Standard = fast + great for screens. High-Res = maximum detail + best for printing and editing.
